The Lew'elan were a seafaring peoples.
The settlers who came to the Wild Space planet a long time ago named their new world Lew'el, which means "deluge", and lived by the sea, which provided everything they needed. With Lew'el remaining a largely forgotten world.
Lew'el was where Luke Skywalker learned to spearfish, something that would help him survive during his time on Ahch-To.
