Knights of the Old Republic 12

Publishers summary

Take fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick, throw in a big-mouthed con artist, two mysterious refugees, and one grumpy droid and you've got the most unpredictable, fast-paced, just-plain-exciting take on the Star Wars universe since a scoundrel named Solo helped Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star!

For this misfit crew of unlikely heroes, life in the Old Republic is anything by idyllic. Scheming to scrounge up some scratch on the banking world of Telerath, they've run afoul of two bounty-hunting brothers as dangerous to the galaxy as they are to each other. It's going to take more than a lightsaber to get Zayne and his friends out of this one—such as deceits, disguises, and a bit of the good ol' fashioned Force!

Plot summary

Aboard their ship on Telerath, the Moomo Williwaw, bounty hunter brothers Del and Dob Moomo are being berated by a hologram of Jedi Master Raana Tey for kidnapping, rather than spying on, banker Arvan Carrick. After the scolding and a fist fight between themselves, Dob disembarks the ship to go to a cantina, leaving Del and Carrick aboard.

Meanwhile, on another part on the banking planet, Zayne reveals to Gryph and Jarael that the banker who was kidnapped was in fact his father. Wondering why his father would be the target of a kidnapping, Jarael deduces that capturing Zayne's father was a way of drawing Zayne out from hiding. Considering themselves lucky to have ran into Zayne's father before the trap was ready, the three head back to The Last Resort to work on a plan to rescue Zayne's father.

Later that night, Gryph enters the cantina where Dob is posted and initiates a conversation with him. Gryph makes an offer to Dob to trade Zayne's father for Zayne himself, an offer that Dob accepts after extensive persuasion and alcohol from Gryph. Dob tells Gryph the location of his ship, and tells him to meet their in an hour. Hearing the location of the Moomo's through a hidden transmitter that Gryph has, Zayne makes his way over to it.

Arriving at the ship before Dob, Zayne sneaks in and eavesdrops on a conversation between Del and Raana Tey in which she tells the him that she will be arriving at Telerath in a few days to sort out their mess and orders him to wait in orbit for her. Taking note of Master Tey's involvement with his father's kidnapping, Zayne frees his dad and escapes the ship with him.

Back aboard The Last Resort, Arvan tells the group that he will still be able to access Gryph's account and withdrawn his credits. Taking his share of the credits, Zayne immediately has his father transfer it to someone on Taris, despite the fact that the planet is currently under siege by the Mandalorians. After the transfer, Zayne tells his dad to get a transfer off Telerath to Dantooine, the only place he believes his family will be safe.
