Knights were warriors in the culture of several species, including the Serp of the planet Serphidi and the Anointed People of the planet Abonshee. In the Serp culture, knights were full-fledged warriors. Before becoming a knight, a Serp had to serve as an apprentice warrior known as a squire for a time.
