The planet was uninhabitable and had little natural resources that were worth mining.
The planet was initially surveyed during the time of the Old Republic. While the second planet of the system, Kira II - designated Kira Prime, was deemed worthy of further developement, Kira III was classified as uninhabitable.
When a follow-up survey was conducted several years later, Kira III - as well as Kira I and Kira II had been destroyed by an unknown cataclysm. The remnants of the three planets formed an instable asteroid field, which inherited the name Kira Prime.
When the Kira Run was established years later, the asteroids remained a small, but constant hazard for hyperspace travel.
