The keelkana was first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the 2019 Fantasy Flight Games roleplaying supplement Gadgets and Gear. They originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where the species first appeared in "Chapter 5" of Star Wars: Clone Wars in 2003.
