Jedi temple (Gloam)

The Jedi Temple on the planet Gloam was a temple built centuries prior to the High Republic Era. Around 382 BBY, the now ruined temple was rediscovered by Jedi Master Rok Buran after his Padawan, Maliq, and Pathfinder team were killed in an ambush caused by their Katikoot guide, Rillik. Jedi Padawan Rooper Nitani and Jedi Knight Silandra Sho reached the site sometime later, responding to Master Buran's distress call, and found the injured Jedi. They all left the ruins a short time later to prevent Rillik from threatening Sho and Nitani's own Pathfinder team.

Layout

The Jedi temple on Gloam featured a cylindrical tower and a lower level accessible from the outside. The tower structure was made with expertly shaped blocks carved with geometric patterns. A carved stone gateway found on the outside of the tower allowed for entry to the lower level. Once through the gateway, a long, narrow passageway led downward to a more open lower level area. The walls of the lower level were covered in frescos that depicted ancient Jedi figures clad in white robes pushing back against a dark form that loomed about them. Multiple different scenes told the narrative on display. A notable part of the mural was the image of a Katikoot Jedi, standing with arms outstretched in a halo of light. The lower level gradually opened up to a cavernous great hall, with huge smooth pillars lining a pathway through the middle of the room, and two statues of long-forgotten Jedi sat on either end of this lane. One of these figures was a hooded woman. The floor of this basement hall was covered in polished flagstones. The rest of the structure had other wall paintings, and wood was used in some part of the temple's construction or decoration.

History

Centuries before the High Republic Era, the Jedi Order made contact with the Katikoot and their homeworld of Gloam. They built a temple there, but ultimately abandoned it. Around 382 BBY, Master Rok Buran, his Padawan, Maliq, and their Pathfinder team arrived seeking to help the Katikoot sentient species which had now migrated to the twin planet of Aubadas. Their mission brought them to Gloam, but soon into their expedition, the Katikoot guide Rillik led them into a trap which saw Buran's Padawan and his entire Pathfinder team killed.

Fleeing from the chaos and nearly delirious from pain, Master Buran was drawn to the ruins of the Jedi temple. Several days after his arrival, he left the safety of the temple, and encountered the same creatures Rillik had used in his ambush against the Jedi and the Pathfinder team. Buran retreated back to the temple, observing the creatures for a few more days, before he made a break for the Pathfinder starship, the Foundling. However, the ship had been destroyed. He was able to scavenge some rations, and recover the damaged EX droid EX-8C to send a distress signal before he retreated once more to the Gloam temple. He remained there for a period of time which felt like weeks to him, barely scraping by due to his injuries and limited rations.

EX-8C reached Master Sho's Pathfinder team and the group responded to the distress call. They were led on the path of Buran's group by the Katikoot from Aubadas, landing on Gloam and splitting up to look for survivors. Padawan Rooper Nitani felt drawn away from the ruins of the ancient city, with her master trusting her instincts, and the two came upon the ruins of the temple soon after. The temple had been considerably worn with time, the geometric carvings on its blocks becoming unfamiliar, and the structure itself sagged with a great deal of its masonry strewn about the area.

The pair soon found the ancient gateway to the lower level, blocked by Master Buran for his protection, and they removed the blockage to continue down. They passed through the fresco hallway, seeing only parts of the ancient narrative as age had worn and damaged the full scene. When they reached the great hall, they saw similar damage, with the statue of the female Jedi now damaged and several of the columns toppled over. Master Buran lay in the middle of the room, and they rushed to his side.

After setting up a fire using wood found within the ruins, the injured Master told Padawan Nitani and Knight Sho what had happened to his group, and also explained his theory regarding the zombie-like monsters which roamed the planet, and had attacked his group. The three Jedi soon realized that the other members of Master Sho's team were in danger, as Rillik was also their guide to the planet. Unable to contact any member of the Pathfinder team due to ongoing communication interference, the trio of Jedi set out from the temple to stop Rillik.
