Jakoosk

Jakoosks were a species of large creatures capable of flying and burrowing under snow native to the ice moon Celsor 3. They had thick gray skin that was able to resist starfighter cannons, though its lighter underside was more vulnerable and a direct hit with a blaster cannon to it would kill a jakoosk dead in one shot, as well as a large mouth filled with equally large teeth and several sets of pincer-like limbs on their undersides that could be used to grab prey and force them into its open mouth.

Jakoosk meat, once cooked, could be eaten by a variety of species such as humans, Gilliands, Gamorreans, Gozzos, Chadra-Fan, Theelins, and Nautolans; this fact did not appear to be common knowledge, as both Kazuda Xiono and Jarek Yeager expressed surprise upon being informed that jakoosk meat was edible.

When the Ace Squadron conducted combat training exercises on the moon, they awoke a jakoosk that eventually attacked them. Hype Fazon was the first pilot targeted by the creature, though it was freed when Torra Doza caused an ice pillar to collapse on top of it. Soon after, the same jakoosk captured Jarek Yeager in his fighter, before the other Aces managed to free him by collapsing another ice pillar onto the creature.

The jakoosk that had threatened the Aces was later hunted to provide food for the Colossus platform, first by the Warbird gang. The warbird gang ignored Kazuda Xiono's warnings regarding the creature, and as a result, returned to the Colossus empty-handed. Xiono and Torra Doza later returned to Celsor 3, in another attempt to hunt the jakoosk. The jakoosk had briefly disabled the cannon meant to bring it down, but utilizing CB-23 as a battery instead, Xiono managed to bring the jakoosk down. The jakoosk's remains were made into food by Aunt Z.

Behind the scenes

A jakoosk first appeared in the Star Wars Resistance episode "Live Fire." Early in the episode's development, the jakoosk was simply known as "ice creature," and was at one point a thranta based on Ralph McQuarrie designs. The creature continued to evolve, and it was dubbed an "ice brith" in a script draft, before ultimately being renamed as "jakoosk."
