The J20 electrscope first appeared in "The Children from Tehar," the sixth episode of the first season of the Star Wars Resistance animated television series which premiered on November 4, 2018. The scope was first previewed earlier in the year on August 17 in the first trailer for the series, which was posted on StarWars.com and the official Disney YouTube channel. It was identified as a "J20 electroscope" in the 2019 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition.
Concept art for Pyre's blaster, which included the scope, for Star Wars Resistance was completed by Lucasfilm Animation artist Amy Beth Christenson on February 28, 2017. The model was sourced from Phasma's blaster, with only the color being changed to gold. Concept design for the F-11ABA heavy blaster cannon, which incorporated the scope, was completed by Matthew Savage for Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, the final film of the sequel trilogy which released in 2019.
