In the Star Wars Legends continuity, howlers were originally created for the 2002 Raven Software video game Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and can be found in the game's files; however, they were cut from the final version of the game. They then appeared for the first time in Raven Software's 2003 sequel, Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.
