The hilt was the portion of a melee weapon that was held by its wielder. Most lightsabers had hilts that were the same length as those of other melee weapons and could be held with two hands despite being designed with one hand in mind. Extended hilts were modifications that lengthened the hilt of a lightsaber to accommodate a two-handed stance.
