On September 21, 2023, it was confirmed that del Toro was set to direct a Star Wars film with a screenplay by David S. Goyer, with it in production around 2019; however, the project was eventually cancelled. Del Toro teased the project's subject matter with the letters "J" and "BB." Prior to this in 2015, del Toro expressed interest in making a Star Wars film about Jabba the Hutt's rise to power. Del Toro later confirmed the film was about the "rise and fall" of Jabba.
