Grievous's mask

Description

Grievous's fearsome Kaleesh mask was carved from the skull and bone of a mumuu with the teeth of a karabbac, and when in battle, karabbac blood smudged over his slit-pupil golden eyes that looked through his Kaleesh mask.

History

Decades before the Clone Wars, the infamous warlord Qymaen jai Sheelal, now known as Grievous, donned his Kaleesh mask in battles, such as the struggle war between his people and the Yam'rii, until one day he suffered terrible injuries in a sabotage shuttle crash that nearly killed him, destroying most of what remained of his original body. When Grievous became the General of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, he retained his homeworld's tradition and based his faceplate on the skull-like mask he once wore as a feared warrior and warlord.

At some point, an Ithorian collector named Dok-Ondar, the owner of Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities on the planet Batuu, came into possession of an original mumuu-carved Kaleesh mask worn by the late General Grievous and displayed it in his shop. Years later, Resistance spy Vi Moradi, who was hiding from the First Order stormtroopers on Batuu, visited Dok-Ondar's store and noticed a mask that seemed promising, but realized it was a Kaleesh mask that would only draw attention to her.

Behind the scenes

Grievous's mask first appeared in the Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities store at the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge theme park land, which opened to guests at Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2019. Although its owner was not identified until the 2020 reference book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: Traveler's Guide to Batuu, written by Cole Horton, confirmed it to be Grievous's.

originally appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity in "The Eyes of Revolution," a comic story written and illustrated by Warren Fu, published in the Dark Horse Comics anthology Star Wars: Visionaries, released on April 2, 2005, while mentioned in "Unknown Soldier: The Story of General Grievous," an article written by Abel G. Peña and published in the eighty-sixth issue of Star Wars Insider, published on February 13, 2006.
