Gamandar

Gamandar was a planet in the Mid Rim's Iskalon system, considered the twin planet of the nearby waterworld of Iskalon. The homeworld of a humanoid sentient species also known as the Gamandars, the planet was brutally conquered and its people enslaved by the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War. Afterwards, Admiral Griggor Tower established his base of operations in the system in a massive citadel on Gamandar.

Description

A rocky world in the Iskalon system of the Mid Rim, Gamandar was one of three habitable worlds in its star system, joining its "twin" of Iskalon as well as Telfrey. Gamandar was home to a sentient species of the same name, a race of red-skinned humanoids. Gamandar's ecosystem was almost completely destroyed during the Imperial occupation of the planet, as anything natural was wantonly replaced by machinery.

History

During the Galactic Civil War, Gamandar became a major flashpoint in the Imperial subjugation of the Iskalon system. Forces led by Admiral Griggor Tower conquered the planet and enslaved the populace, while also occupying Iskalon and bombarding Telfrey. Tower raised a massive citadel in the aftermath, which became the base from which he ruled the system. The Gamandar natives were put in chains and rounded up to be shipped offworld to serve on work crews, while the planet's ecosystem was devastated—for some Iskalonian visitors, the planet had been rendered almost completely unrecognizable. It was from Gamandar that Tower launched a missile strike in 3 ABY that triggered the Iskalon effect, a massive tidal wave that devastated Iskalonian society, after learning that Gamandar's twin world was harboring a cell of Rebel agents. However, one of those Rebels was Luke Skywalker, a highly desired personal target of the Sith Lord Darth Vader, who ordered Tower put to death for risking Skywalker's life.

Behind the scenes

Gamandar appeared as a setting of three issues of the original Marvel Star Wars comic series in 1983, written by Mary Jo Duffy and illustrated by Ron Frenz.
