A fuel converter was a device that allowed starship captains to forego the expense of buying new fuel cells or refueling. Fuel converters converted other materials, including waste material and methane, into fuel. Three types were in general use; Solid Fuel Converters, Scoops, and Solar Converters.
Fuel converters were parts used in podracers and were used in trades. In 32 BBY, Qui-Gon Jinn acquired a fuel converter to trade for parts for Anakin Skywalker's podracer.
Fuel converters appear in the 1999 video game Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace video game. The player, in the guise of Jinn, must trade for parts to repair Skywalker's podracer during the Mos Espa mission.
