Fantail-class destroyers were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in Rise of the Separatists, a 2019 supplement to Fantasy Flight Games' series of Star Wars Roleplaying products. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Fantail-class destroyer was introduced in Labyrinth of Evil, a 2005 novel authored by James Luceno, in which it was simply referred to as "Fantail." It later received its full name in The Essential Guide to Warfare, a 2012 reference book authored by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart.
