The EnhanceScan general purpose scanner first appeared, albeit unnamed, in the 1980 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. It was later identified in Fully Operational, a 2018 sourcebook for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games. The EnhanceScan general purpose scanner's name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in The Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology, a 1997 reference book published by Del Rey.
