Diplopods were created by author Jason Fry as placeholder creatures for the novel The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, destined to eventually be replaced by happabores as a tie-in to Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. Having grown attached to the creatures, Fry chose to reuse the idea for Servants of the Empire: The Secret Academy.
