Command Base

General description

The Command Base was an hourglass-shaped asteroid. The asteroid's outer crust was covered in air vents and repulsor beam projectors that were highlighted by points of light. The interior of the asteroid was carved into the rock, with corridors and ceilings having no uniform height or width. Control panels and other machinery was built into the walls, and the entire facility was a cross between a high-tech community and a cave. Subdued track lighting was used throughout the base.

Command and control systems

The base's command center was the heart of the Command Base. Computer displays lined the walls of the command center, monitoring the Roche system and the Roche asteroid field. Personnel working on the base also coordinated the activity of the other asteroid colonies involved in the B-wing project. While the design and construction of the B-wing was handled by Research Station Shantipole, other asteroids were required to handle supplies and communications. One side of the room was dominated by a holo-tank, and the base's blast doors could be controlled from the command center's main console.

Just outside the command center, a separate room housed the base's communications center. The room was filled with control consoles and chairs lining the walls. Near the middle of the room was a large, clear plastic board that had the trajectories of larger asteroids within the asteroid belt traced on it.

An auxiliary command center, including computers and communications equipment, was located just off the lifeboat bay. The center was intended for use during an emergency.

Crew facilities

The living quarters on the Command Base consisted of one main room organized into a large communal barracks, an arrangement that the Verpines preferred. Along one wall, five separate small rooms were set up for use by Commander Gial Ackbar and his Alliance team. A recreation area was also on the base, housing tables and chairs, a food dispenser, and a dejarik game.

One part of the base was dedicated to storage filled with boxes of supplies for both the Verpine and the Alliance personnel. Most items needed by the personnel of the base could be found in the storage area, except for weapons. A medical center was also present on the asteroid, equipped with eight beds, asingle bacta tank, and a curtained-off surgical area.

Hangar facilities

The main hangar bay was carved from the asteroid, hewn out of reddish-brown stone. The bay had a high ceiling, but narrow walls, barely fitting a light freighter and a pair of asteroid hoppers. A control tower was mounted on one wall, jutting out over the hangar deck. Instrument panels and cooling equipment covered the walls.

Two exits led away from the hangar bay. The main exit was a wide stone passage accessed a corridor leading towards the communications center, living quarters, and main power generators. The second exit led straight to the base's recreation area.

A lifeboat bay was located at the other end of the asteroid, which handled smaller craft and most of the asteroid hopper traffic. The bay included three medium sized lifeboats recessed into the outer wall and ready for immediate launch. Each lifeboat was capable of carrying fifteen passengers each.

Life support systems

Power to the Command Base was provided by five-meter tall main power generators located in a rocky room near the hangar bay. Catwalks, accessible by ladders, ringed the upper levels of the generators and pipes led from the machinery into the stone walls to transfer power to the base. Back-up power was provided by an auxiliary power unit located in a room near the main generators, where it was housed alongside an auxiliary coolant system.

Life support systems for the Command Base included atmosphere generators mounted on meter-thick bases of reinforced permacite. Dozens of pipes led out of the machines into the rocky walls, generating an air supply for the entire base. The hollowed-out room had three airlocks to the asteroid's exterior, and a wall locker containing ten space suits.

The Command Base also had three tall silver repulsor beam generators interconnected by a number of thin filaments/ Each generator produced the power necessary to shield the asteroid from collisions with other asteroids in the field.

Inhabitants

The Command Base was staffed by fifty Verpine and a half-dozen members of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Alliance contingent was led by Commander Ackbar, assisted by his lieutenants Salin Glek and Netrem Pollard. The Verpine Suskafoo served a mediator between the Verpine population and the Alliance personnel.
