The Chief of Defense Staff was a Republic political office that had some power over the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. In the event that Republic Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was declared unfit for duty, the Chief of Defense Staff was to take command of the Grand Army until a new Chancellor was elected.
