The Ewoks cartoon was a favorite of both Wallace and Pronovost growing up. Beginning in 2001, the pair began collaborating on the article and drew inspiration from the ongoing feature The University of Sanbra Guide to Intelligent Life in the magazine Star Wars Gamer. According to Wallace, the article was unsuccessfully pitched for Star Wars Insider. It was repackaged and pitched for Star Wars Gamer with roleplaying details, but that magazine's cancellation left the article unpublished. Another Insider pitch was attempted before StarWars.com purchased it as a Hyperspace exclusive.
