Following the Battle of Endor, Luke Skywalker sought to rebuild the Jedi Order. He recruited several Jedi students including his nephew Ben Solo. Skywalker also gained several other students including the humans Voe and Tai and the Quarren Hennix. Due to his strong connection to the Force, Solo excelled in his Jedi training.

However, the dark sider Snoke took an interest in Solo, concerning Master Skywalker. While peering into the mind of his nephew one night, Skywalker saw Snoke's dark machinations and the death and despair that he would bring. In a moment of pure instinct, Skywalker ignited his lightsaber to kill his nephew, seeking to prevent the destruction that he would bring. However, Skywalker realized that it was only a moment and was overcome by shame and guilt. Unfortunately for Skywalker, it was too late and Solo awoke and ignited his lightsaber in self defense. Believing that his uncle was out to kill him, Solo collapsed his hut on top of his uncle.

Tai, Voe, and Hennix confronted Ben Solo following the temple's destruction.

A confused and despondent Solo emerged from the hut. Then, a massive lightning storm destroyed the Jedi temple, killing many of the other pupils. Shortly after the Jedi students Voe, Tai, and Hennix returned on their starship Verity. They confronted Solo, who told them that Skywalker had tried to kill him. The three other Jedi did not believe him and attempted to question him. Following a brief confrontation, Solo wounded Hennix and fled aboard his ship Grimtaash.

The other Jedi gave chase but Solo managed to damage one of the Veritys engines and find Snoke, who posed as a kindly and wise figure. With the encouragement of Snoke, Solo sought out Ren, the leader of the Knights of Ren, a dark side cult. Solo traveled to the Jedi outpost on Elphrona where he contact Ren using a discarded helmet from an earlier encounter. Ren instructed him to meet him on Varnak. Before he could leave, he was confronted by Hennix, Tai, and Voe, who had managed to track him down.

Upon arriving, Solo engaged in a lightsaber duel with Voe and Hennix while Tai, who had been on friendly terms with Solo, tried to probe his mind, but Solo hurled him aside as he continued to clash sabers with his former classmates. Furious that the other Jedi had followed him but unwilling to kill them, Solo fled to a high rock outside the outpost. Voe, who had harbored a rivalry with Solo and believed that he had murdered the Jedi at the temple, Force jumped after him, saying it was too late to let him go

Hennix, who was unable to keep up with Voe, tried to warn her not to go too far. The Quarren began climbing while Voe chastised Ben for betraying the Jedi during their chase, calling him a murderer that needs to face justice. While Tai stayed down and didn't follow his classmates, Voe and Hennix soon cornered Solo at the top of the rock. Angered that Voe had denounced him as a murderer, Ben pushed her off the rock but was soon overcome by guilt and regret.

Solo ended the battle by burying the Jedi under the rubble of the outpost.

Solo tried to pull Voe to safety but failed. Hennix, who thought that Ben had sent Voe to her death, attacked Solo in a moment of rage by throwing his lightsaber at him. Trying to defend himself from the attack, Solo deflected the lightsaber, throwing it back at Hennix and killing him in self-defense. Meanwhile, Tai managed to barely slow down Voe's fall. Before the two could aid Hennix, whom they heard scream, Solo caught up with them. When questioned about what happened to Hennix, Solo said it didn't matter and used the Force to hurl them into the Elphrona Jedi outpost. To prevent them from following him any further, he collapsed two statues on top of them, destroying the outpost and burying his former classmates in the rubble.

Aftermath

Solo then traveled to Varnak where he met up with Ren and the Knights of Ren. Solo recounted his story to the Knights, seeking to earn a place among their ranks by scoring a "good kill." However, Ren deemed Hennix's death as insufficient since Solo had not killed Hennix intentionally. Still, Ren allowed Solo to join their group as a means of finding a way to earn a "good death."

Meanwhile, Tai and Voe freed themselves from the rubble of the Jedi outpost. Having learnt from his mind probe that Solo was seeking the Knights of Ren, Tai accepted Voe's view that Solo was lost. Deeming Solo lost, the two decided to avenge Hennix's death.
