It was common for stormtrooper squadmates to have trained together in large classes called batches, such as Batch Eight.

Batch Eight was a large class that consisted of First Order military cadets who trained to become the next generation of stormtroopers. The graduates of Batch Eight included troopers 926 and FN-2187, both of whom were noted for their marksmanship skills. 926 went on to serve aboard the Mega-class Star Dreadnought Supremacy, flagship of Supreme Leader Snoke, along with other Batch Eight alumni by the time of the First Order's war with the Resistance. Unknown to 926, however, FN-2187 had deserted the Stormtrooper Corps, abandoning his designation and becoming known as "Finn" to members of the Resistance.

During the First Order's assault on the Resistance fleet, 926 encountered Finn—disguised as an officer. Recognizing his former classmate, 926 reintroduced himself to the former stormtrooper. Although it was against protocol for soldiers to converse with officers, 926 expressed pride at seeing a fellow member of Batch Eight attaining the rank of captain.
