Barbels, informally known as "chin tentacles," were the tendril-like appendages that fringed the mouth and chin of a Mon Calamari regardless of their sex. Some, like Prince Lee-Char, adorned their barbels with ornaments. The barbels were an indicator of youth when only one was present on the chin, and this made elder Mon Calamari look bearded. Similarly, the Gungans of Naboo grew fleshy chin whiskers as they aged.
