As a young man, Atour Riten fought for the Janissariad during the Balduran Civil War. The experience left him with a distaste for any form of centralized government. Disgusted with politics, Riten decided to become a librarian and an archivist.
The Balduran Civil War shared its name with the Baldur system, a star system located in the Nojic sector of the Expansion Region.
