A backup hyperdrive was a secondary hyperdrive unit found on most starships. Such drives were usually underpowered, slow, and antiquated. Backup hyperdrives had a range of only ten light-years, and after each use, the unit had to be reconditioned in a shipyard before further use. They were only intended to be used in an emergency situation.
